Franz Bergmann Foundry (1861-Austria-1936) MINIATURE PAIR OF BARZOI DOGS IN VIENNA BRONZE ▫️ Bronze ▫️ 10.6 x 6.8 x 4.6 cm ▫️ ca 1900, Austria ▫️ Seated dog marked at bottom: 0676 ▫️ Private collection Netherlands; Acquired at Sotheby's Amsterdam 2001 ▫️ Excellent condition _______________________ ABOUT THE ARTWORK Exceptional and rare pair of Vienna bronze Borzoi dogs, one standing and one sitting. Both carry a leash with a token. The Borzoi is known as the Russian Tsar's dog, related to the wolf family. The pair has a beautiful patina, and is very nicely molded and chased in detail. The quality is high, thanks in particular to the cold painting technique. This technique refers to bronzes that were cast in Vienna and then delicately decorated in several layers with gold dust. As the color was not heated, it is known as cold painting. The know-how for this type of painting has been lost. _______________________ ABOUT THE FOUNDRY The Bergmann foundry employed many anonymous sculptors, usually on a temporary basis.
