The harbor was one of Gerard Delfgaauw's favorite subjects. With the horizon in the background, the steamship leaves the harbor, surrounded by smaller ships and other smaller steamers. ABOUT THE ARTIST Dutch painter Gerardus Johannes Delfgaauw (1882-1947) lived and worked in Rijswijk since 1914. He was self-taught, mainly in the impressionist-naturalist style. He worked mainly around Rotterdam and The Hague, where he painted impressive landscapes, city and harbor views and winter scenes. Delfgaauw's work was already highly regarded in his day. Through the art dealer van Gessel, his works were commissioned. Pseudonym To preserve the quality of his work, Delfgaauw is said to have painted for a short time under the pseudonym of H. van Gessel, although it is also likely that the art dealer himself signed these paintings as such.
