ACCUMULATING KNOWLEDGE ▫️ Bronze with gold brown patinated bronze books ▫️ 236.5 x 50 x 68 cm ▫️ Germany, 2005 ▫️ Signed ▫️ Private collection Belgium ▫️ Excellent condiition ABOUT THE ARTWORK Original casting in bronze, Cire Perdue technique. The larger-than-life bronze sculpture takes up a globally explosive topic, namely that of education: 'Accumulating knowledge'. The sculpture has been designed in 2001 and casted in 2005. Cire perdue Cire perdue is a technique for casting a bronze sculpture. The name 'cire perdue' literally means 'lost wax' in French. The artist first makes a model from wax, usually modelling wax or casting wax. The model is fitted with casting channels to allow the metal to flow and vent channels to allow air to escape. The model is then encased in a ceramic layer, which hardens after drying. The ceramic mould is heated in a kiln to melt and burn out the wax. The mould is then filled with molten bronze, which cools and solidifies into the shape of the model. The ceramic mould is then smashed or ground to reveal the bronze sculpture. The sculpture is then finished by cutting off the casting channels, cleaning the surface and possibly patinating . This technique has been used since the Bronze Age to make jewellery, works of art and other complex shapes . Accumulating knowledge According to the artist, each additional book read piles up the knowledge into a pillar, motivating for ever new information. The sculpture symbolizes the quest for knowledge and the curiosity that drives it. The books represent the accumulated wisdom of humanity. In keeping with this idea, the artist shows a human figure here, sitting on a tower of stacked books, with another large open book in her raised hands, held up towards the sky. The sculpture also reflects the artist's personal experience of learning and exploring different cultures and disciplines. Artist quote on the artwork 'Accumulating knowledge': 'Literature encourages wisdom and improvement of universal conditions. Reading ook after book accumulates to a pile of knowledge, motivating the continuing quest for yet more information.' EXPERT REPORT The artwork has an expert report dated 31st July 2005. It has been researched and reported by Frederic Got, Galerie Castiglione, Paris. ABOUT THE ARTIST Tolla Inbar is a German-born Israeli contemporary sculptor who lives in Germany since 1985. She is known for her expressive bronze figures that explore themes such as human relationships, emotions, and spirituality. Education After attending school in Stuttgart, where she concentrated on ceramics and sculpture, she immigrated to Israel. While passionately pursuing her interests in art and participating in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Israel and Europe, Tolla earned a B.A. in psychology and sociology from Tel Aviv University. Her academic pursuits had a great influence on her creative expression. She later returned to Tel Aviv University to study modern art and learn the traditions of those before her. Inspiration Her works are often inspired by her own life experiences, such as her childhood in a kibbutz, where she learned to appreciate nature and community, her travels around the world, where she encountered different cultures and religions, and her personal challenges, such as coping with the loss of her father and brother. Style Throughout her career, Tolla’s works have evolved from realistic and figurative to more expressive and semi-abstract forms. Using the ancient method of bronze casting, Tolla’s work embodies universal questions regarding the reasons for living and the complexity of the universe. The suggestion of movement is strikingly present in these inanimate works. Tolla believes in an individual path that we all must work through in order to reach our spiritual goal. The soul, she believes, is a reflection of the universe and motivates our inner drive. Tolla uses the metaphor of climbing on various external props to express this. The “souls” in these sculptures use stairs, ladders and ropes to fulfill ambitions and aspirations. Since 1995, Tolla has been working in her unique, naturalistic style, combining wood, metal, glass and bronze to create both maquette and monumental sculptures that delight private and corporate collectors worldwide Exhibitions and rewards Inbar's sculptures have been exhibited in many countries, including the United States, China, Italy, and France, and have received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. She has also received several awards and honors, such as the International Sculpture Prize Pietrasanta e la Versilia nel Mondo in 2008, the Honorary Citizenship of Pietrasanta in 2010, and the Gold Medal of the City of Florence in 2012. Personal vision Inbar's artistic vision is to create sculptures that communicate with the viewers and touch their hearts, by expressing universal human emotions and values.
