Description

A Greek bronze jug (olpe), 5th - 4th century B.C. Bronze jug with a flat base, a centering hole in the middle. The lower part slightly flaring upwards to the soft rim and tapering conically upwards to a narrow neck well below half its height. The broad, outturned rim is funnel-shaped on the inside and faceted and turned on the outside. Almost round handle, flattened at the sides, which protrudes over the rim in a curved arc and is returned under the flared rim, where it is hammered out to form a wide sheet metal cuff and connected to the rim by two rivets. At the lower end, the handle merges into a stylized animal foot, the tip of which is placed on a drop-shaped, leaf-shaped attachment that is soldered to the belly of the vessel. Slightly stained, extremely beautiful "water patina" with dark, reddish and greenish oxide spots, which allows the metallic background to shine through. Attractive, shiny surface. A very beautiful and intact example of a Greek olpe. Height with handle 20.5 cm. Provenance: From Hermann Historica, auction 58 in October 2009, lot 54, consigned at the time by the Frankfurt art dealer B. G. Condition: I - II
