Description

An archaic protome of a woman's head made of clay, 2nd half of the 6th century B.C. Female head made of clay, votive offering, probably depicting a goddess. Finely modeled face with an archaic smile. The hair over the forehead is held by a stephane. A chiton is pulled over the top as a head covering. Circular earrings in front of the earlobes. Lower left corner broken off, otherwise intact and with a very nicely preserved surface with traces of painting. Dark color on the chiton, circular eye motif in brownish color on the chest. Plus a Plexiglas stand. Exceptionally beautiful and well-preserved archaic protome. Height 13 cm, width 8.7 cm. Provenance: Berlin private collection. Taken over from the parents' possessions, acquired in 1981 by the father in the Swiss art trade (Münzen und Medaillen A.G. Basel). Condition: II +
