Description

A bronze mortar by Peter van den Ghein II, Mechelen, dated 1582 Bronze with beautiful brownish-black patina. Slightly conical body with a strongly flared foot and lip. Circumferential decorative frieze on the wall. The lip with the inscription "PETRUS VANDEN GHEIN ME FECIT MDLXXXII". Height 14 cm, diameter 17.5 cm, weight 5.95 kg. Peter van den Ghein II, documented as a bell founder in Mechelen from 1561 to 1593, died in 1598 and took over the workshop of his father Peter van den Ghein I, who died in 1561. A mortar also signed by him with an identical frieze is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (object number BK-1976-10-A). Condition: II +
