Beschreibung

Weaving mill - pattern book of Johann Michael Hammerbacher "zu Boschbach bey Anspach". German manuscript on paper. With 90 (7 double-page or folded) pattern plates printed in brown pen on black (occasionally red) grid paper. Middle Franconia, 1763. 18 pp. Text, the plate part (bound upside down and counted from the back) interleaved with blank leaves, these partly described with diagrams of "Zug und Tritt" and short explanations. Some leaves missing at the beginning and end. 20.5 x 17 cm. Stapled, without binding. The text with the head title "Löblicher Handwercks-Gebrauch und Gewohnheit für die Jung Weber-Gesellen, Samt beygegefügten Regeln, wie man einen zum Gesellen thut machen". This journeyman's code concludes with Hammerbacher's name, the location, which we have not identified, and the year. Sample plates are already bound in here and diagrams are entered on blank pages; the rules were evidently added later to the end of the older collection of samples. Counted in 2 series (blank pages included) and of great richness, the use of specially printed grid paper is also interesting. Explanations to the diagrams read something like "20 Schäfftig und dass ist der Zug zu dem gebült". - Fingerstaining, first text leaf with corner tear with loss of some words, the plates with some heavy ink erosion, some only fragmentarily preserved.
