Description

Opitz, Georg Emanuel (attributed). Untitled. (Dancing couple on the stage). Watercolor, gouache and lead white over brown and black pen on wove paper. Circa 1830. motif dimensions: 23 x 18 cm. Sheet dimensions: 25.8 x 18.8 cm. Characteristic erotic depiction of a couple copulating in public by Georg Emanuel Opitz (1775-1841). - Opitz, born in Prague and a pupil of Francesco Guiseppi Casanova in Dresden among other places, settled in Leipzig around 1817. As a much-traveled miniaturist, watercolorist and engraver, he devoted himself to portrait painting as well as military and sometimes spicy genre scenes. The sheet, probably created in Leipzig around 1830 in the tradition of Thomas Rowlandson, was evidently also inspired by Japanese shunga woodcuts by Utamaro - Mounted under passepartout along the upper edge of the sheet on the verso and backed with strips of paper along the right edge of the sheet as well as with traces of an earlier mounting in the corners, these somewhat creased overall and with minor restorations at the top. - Provenance: From the collection of Hans-Jürgen Döpp, Frankfurt.
