AN UNUSUAL PAIR OF FRENCH CAST IRON VASES WITH WINGED DRAGON HANDLES, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY

The dragon pattern handles flanking the campana shaped urn with everted rim and lobed base section. 81 cm. high, 22 cm. square at the base. The handles appear to be modelled after the model in the Parterre du Midi, Versailles by Claude Ballin, the designs can also be seen in etchings produced by Jean Le Pautre. See John Davis, Antique Garden Ornament, p 135 (plate 3.2) for an illustration of a copy of the Versailles 'Dragon' vases from the Wallace Collection."
