Tapis - Tibet (1900-1920)

Thick, hand-knotted woollen cushion rug decorated with two snow lions, often represented in pairs, they are the symbol of prosperity but also of driving away evil spirits. Protector of the Buddha, they support the thrones of various Buddhist deities. Between them, the luminous blue pearl in the shape of a flower symbolizes happiness, abundance, wisdom and knowledge for its owner. Good condition. 37 x 52 cm. Provenance: Sandro VOLTA Collection (1900-1986) and descendants. Sandro VOLTA was a writer, journalist and art collector, who wrote the preface to his friend Tristan Tzara's "Manifesto of Dadaism". On May 16 and 17, 1957 at Hôtel Drouot, part of his collection was sold by Maître Rheims. Sansdro VOLTA was a correspondent for the newspaper LA STAMPA in China and Tibet from 1925 to 1932.
