In March 1958, six months after the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, the Soviet regime announced a competition for a monument to "the age of space humanity". Among 350 proposals, that of sculptor Andrei Petrovich Faïdych-Krandievski was chosen. The monument was inaugurated on October 4, 1964, the seventh anniversary of Sputnik 1.
