Sonnets and etchings. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1869. In-folio, long-grained red percaline, cold fillet on boards, title in large gilt capitals on first board, untrimmed (Publisher's binding). First edition, edited by Philippe Burty. Collection of 42 sonnets by contemporary authors (Théodore de Banville, Anatole France, Théophile Gautier, Jose-Maria de Heredia, Leconte de Lisle, Verlaine, etc.), each accompanied by an etching. This remarkable illustration, in its first edition, includes 41 original etchings by great painters and engravers, such as Édouard Manet, whose etching for Fleur exotique illuminates the collection, Corot, Jongkind, Doré and Millet, as well as an etching reproducing a drawing by Victor Hugo. The plates were destroyed after printing. One of 350 copies on laid paper. Copy in the publisher's cartonnage. Upper head and lower spine (over 10 cm) skilfully restored.
