Oil on canvas, probably relined, after the portrait executed by Joseph Karl Stieler. 78.4 x 62.4 cm. Signed upper left "M. Lanninger/n. Stieler". Painted inscription on the letter (also) "Ja! wie sich der Blume Flor erneuet, / Durch den Saamen den sie ausgestreuet, / Zieht ein Kunstwerk auch das andre nach. / Aus dem Leben keimet frisches Leben, / Das zum Werk gewordene Gefühl / wird ein Neues künftig herrlich geben, / Selber nach Jahrtausenden Gewühl. / - / Im Herbste 1818 / Ludwig". Illegible stamp on verso due to faint impression. Framed. Slightly glossy varnish. Minor craquelure in places (especially in the dark background).
