Description

ITALY. VITTORIO EMANUELE III OF SAVOIA and ELENA DEL MONTENEGRO, 1900-1946. ORDER OF THE CROWN OF ITALY. Knight's decoration with miniature and button. Measurements: cross 36x36 mm. - miniature 16x16 mm. Enameled metal. Very good condition. Honor accompanied by 3 interesting writings, including two letters dated April and December 1920, with header of Her Majesty the Queen's Wardrobe. Also added is a period photograph depicting Umberto II of Savoy, his wife Marie José of Belgium and their four children. The copy is signed by Marie José. In beautiful monogrammed case of Victor Emmanuel III of Savoy. The letters are dated 1920 and signed by Pauline Audrey(?), perhaps the wardrobe manager of Queen Elena of Montenegro, and are addressed to Mr. Gatti, probably the owner of an important tailor's shop in early 20th-century Rome. Interestingly, from these texts we can infer, at least partially, the stylistic tastes of the sovereign. The third very brief writing, almost an annotation, mentions a "medal," precisely the knight's decoration offered here, awarded by Her Majesty the Queen for excellent work in tailoring. This is a fascinating set of documents that provides an overview of life, including less usual and more private aspects, of the Italian monarchy in the first half of the 1900s.
