BOYSSIÈRES (Jean de).

Les Secondes œuvres poetiques. Meslanges. Paris, Pour Jean Poupy, 1568 [sic for 1578]. In-4, black morocco, double cold fillet, ornate spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Honnelaître). This is the only edition, partly original, of the second part of the triptych of Œuvres poétiques by this poet from Auvergne. The other two were published as Premières œuvres amoureuses (1578) and Troisièmes œuvres (1579). Ronsard donated a quatrain for this work: Virgile, pour essay chanta sa Bucolique [...] Boyssières, a chanté son Amoureux tourment (cf. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, II-1, n°93). A copy with fine margins. Second edition of the theatrical and poetic works of Jean Prevost (1580?-1622), a lawyer by profession and poet in his spare time, who met the singular fate of being imprisoned for debts following a lawsuit brought against him by his future in-laws, who disputed that he had been designated universal legatee by his fiancée. He owed his freedom to the help of his poet friends Abel and Scévole de Sainte-Marthe. This edition of the works consists of three parts: the Tragédies et autres œuvres poëtiques, Les Secondes œuvres poetiques et tragiques and Apotheose du tres-chrestien Roy de France et de Navarre Henry IIII. These three parts have separate titles dated 1618 for the first and 1613 for the other two. Vellum soiled, creased, one inner hinge weak, paper browned, small wormholes.

The Œuvres poétiques contain a Latin opuscule De coelestibus Asterismis Poëmatium (4f. including a title page), followed by the Recueil des Nouvell'œuvres poetiques (20 folios), both in first editions. Mantice... and Solitaire premier... are volumes generally found following the Œuvres poétiques. Œuvres poétiques. As these two pieces were published by the same publisher, we may well ask whether they are not an integral part of the edition. A handsome engraved title for Œuvres poétiques and a title frame for Solitaire premier. Staining to several leaves.
