Le Discours. Rouen, Martin Le Mesgissier, 1560. In-4, green morocco, double gilt fillet, ornate spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Lortic fils). First edition of this collection of 117 moral sonnets, written by a dramatic poet from Rouen who drew on the work of Du Bellay. These sonnets express the disappointment of the honest man discouraged by the frivolity of courtiers and the uselessness of his own efforts in the realm of futility (J. P. Barbier-Mueller). Woodcut coat of arms on title page (lined title page, short at foot, restoration to inner margin of second paper with some loss of a few letters, last two blank papers missing, short at head, other minor defects). Eighteenth-century Jansenist binding in hazel-colored calf with friezes and title in gilt on spine, unghiatura à dentelles, red boards (back plate detached, stain to front plate). Possession note to title page. Rare first edition that also describes the trial and death of Jeanne d'Arc. Also in the lotRerum Gallicarum byBeaucaire de Péguillon in the 1625 Lyon edition with large engraved vignette on title page printed in red and black within parchment binding but defects and signs of restoration to first and numerous endpapers. Rouen, Martin Le Mesgissier, 1588, in-8, modern half marbled basane binding, 5-rib spine, gilt title, red edges, 8 ff.-265 pp.-2 ff. table. 2 bookplates, one illustrated. Short margins. 2nd edition just as rare as the first. Small central worm work on last 6 ff. with loss of some letters on last 3 ff., split without missing on f. Q4, small local wetness, otherwise in good condition. The title is adorned with the coat of arms of the city of Rouen supported by two angels, and bears on the verso the arms of Cardinal Charles de Bourbon, archbishop of Rouen, to whom the work is dedicated.
