POUPO (Pierre).

La Muse chrestienne. Paris, Barthélemi Le Franc, 1590. In-12, limp vellum, traces of binding, red edges (16th-century binding). Second edition, partly original, of the Muse chrestienne by Pierre Poupo (1552-1590), a Protestant poet from Champagne-Ardenne. It is enlarged by 26 sonnets and 2 epigrams, and contains one book (the second book) more than the original edition published in Geneva in 1585. Poupo, without having Goulart's talent as a sonnet writer, easily stands out from the pack of Protestant and Catholic rhymers of the last quarter of the 16th century. He wrote not just a few pleasant verses, but some fine poems (J. P. Barbier-Mueller). This edition is extremely rare, as is the original from Geneva: at the time, J. P. Barbier-Mueller counted only 5 copies, his own and four others located in institutions. Some foxing and stains. The first 2 leaves are badly restored. Copy in a 16th-century binding. J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-5, n°44. - N. Ducimetière, Mignonne..., n°128. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°644.
