SAINTE-MARTHE (Scévole de).

V. C. Scaevolae Sammarthani Quaestoris Franciae Tumulus. Paris, Jacques Villery, 1630. 4 parts in one volume in-4, red chagrin, double cold fillet, ornate spine, gilt edges (Modern binding). Important poetic tomb published in tribute to Scévole de Sainte-Marthe (1536-1623), the great poet and humanist from Loudun. No fewer than 80 authors lent their pens to this work, delivering a wealth of Latin epitaphs, Greek verses and, above all, numerous French pieces: Lachèvre has listed 44 French pieces signed by 29 authors, including Guillaume Colletet, author of Scévole ou Chant pastoral sur le trespas de Monsieur de Sainte-Marthe, Théophraste Renaudot and Tristan L'Hermite. The names of Daniel Heinsius, Hugo Grotius and Fédéric Morel can also be found here and there, among others. The two concluding funeral orations are in continuous pagination, but each has its own title page with the address Paris, 1629: they were delivered in Loudun in 1623, the first by Urbain Grandier, the other by Théophraste Renaudot. Worm spotting and light wetness on the edges of a few leaves, restoration in the margins of several leaves. Lachèvre, Recueils collectifs de poésies, I, pp. 85-86. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°958.
