MAX MOREAU (1902-1992) BELGIAN SCHOOL THE SOUK IN MARRAKECH SOUQ IN MARRAKECH Oil on canvas, signed and dated "1947", lower right. 60 X 81 CM (23 5/8 X 31 7/8 IN.) PROVENANCE Acquired in 1950, during an exhibition of Max Moreau's paintings at the Palais de la Bahia in Marrakech, by Captain Émile Gesvre, Officier de la Légion d'Honneur. NOTE Max Moreau settled in Marrakech, Morocco, in 1947. He stayed for three years. During this period, he frequented the colonial bourgeoisie, painting many of their portraits, as well as many of their artists, including Jacques Majorelle. He also painted portraits of Marrakchis, particularly in the context of their trade. He exhibited at the Palais de la Bahia, as he did in each of the countries he visited.
