Description

[PICASSO] / [BALLETS RUSSES] Théâtre du Châtelet - May 1917 - Les Ballets russes in Paris. Exceptional performances with the gracious assistance of the artists of M. Serge de Diaghilew. Paris, Maurice de Brunoff, s.d. (1917). In-folio, saddle-stitched with wire (one staple missing) upper cover illustrated with a color drawing by Picasso, (34) ff. Without the Châtelet de Paris cover. Small crack on back cover, center leaves detached. Nevertheless, a good copy. Numerous illustrations in the text (photogravure portraits of artists, sets, watercolors of costumes, etc.). Emblematic program of the Parisian avant-garde and surrealism. Includes announcements of performances, notably of Parade (music by Satie to text by Cocteau, set and costumes by Picasso), Petrouchka (Stravinsky), L'Oiseau de Feu (Stravinsky) and others. In Apollinaire's presentation of Parade, we note the first appearance of the term surrealism (here written "sur-réalisme"). In addition to the illustrated cover, two other watercolors by Picasso: Chinese costume from the ballet "Parade", enhanced in color by hand, and acrobat's costume from the ballet "Parade", enhanced in blue by hand. Rare.
