Description

Saumador or censer. Japan, Meiji period, last third of the 19th century. Patinated bronze. Some flaws. Loose handles. Signed on the back. Measurements: 48 x 40 x 24 cm. This censer is characterised by its markedly sculptural nature. The body of the censer rests on three legs, which take the form of figures with their arms raised. The body of the vessel is decorated with a continuous medi-relief of bovids and other wild animals, from which emerge two large handles decorated with hybrid animalistic motifs (jaws, claws and feathers combined in a single body, giving rise to a terrifying creature). The lid features a depiction of a Foo's dog in round bulge. The Foo dog, similar to a lion, is an important symbol in Chinese Taoist culture and, through its influence, also in Japanese and Thai culture. It is identified with protection against evil spirits, which is why it is often depicted in pairs at the entrance of temples, imperial tombs, palaces, government buildings, etc.
