[CURIOSA] Emile Marco de Saint-Hilaire (1796-1887), Histoire populaire et anecdotique de Napoléon et de la grande armée. Paris, Téqui, 1895. Handwritten note on the author, brought back and pasted in, by a personen belonging to the family of a Baron who knew him: "My family knew Emile Marco de St Hilaire in Strasbourg when he was librarian at the Château Impérial". The note includes a few anedotes. Handwritten note on the frontispiece. Handwritten letter signed by Emile Marco de Saint-Hilaire in Strasbourg, dated Friday, October 29, 1869, addressed to the Prefect in response to his invitation. Emile Marco de Saint-Hilaire, whose real name was Emile-Marc Hilaire, was a French feuilletonist, the son of a bailiff and his wife, who was Joséphine's first chambermaid. He specialized in literary forgeries. During his lifetime, he claimed to have been Napoleon 1st's page. He was unmasked in 1909.

There are not many good popular works on the Russian campaign. Saint-Hilaire's is one of them. It is particularly interesting for its precise details on the composition of the armies, the names of the officers, and the fine watercolor engravings by R. de Moraine.

Published by the author of Mémoires d'un page. Paris, Boulland, Urbain Canel et Drevet. 1831. 2 vol. in-8, 414 and 392 pages; 2 folding tables. 1/2 late 19th century red basane. (Marked freckling on the folding tables and on sections 18 to 24 of volume I, and scattered freckling in volume II). First edition. Marco Saint-Hilaire achieved great success in 1830 with his Mémoires et Révélations d'un page de la Cour Impériale. He continues this success in these indiscretions on Les petits appartements des Tuileries, de Saint-Cloud et de la Malmaison, published anonymously, with the only indication "by the author of Mémoires d'un page". It goes without saying that this feuilletonist close to Balzac was never a page.
