Portrait of a gentleman with a medal Gouache on ivory. Half-length portrait to the left. With the cross of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle and the Commander's Cross of Charles III of Spain. Signed "J. Guérin f" on the right edge, dated below. Ivory plate somewhat convexly warped, vertical crack on the left. 9.5 x 7.5 cm. Original ormolu frame. Jean Urbain Guérin, Paris, 1818. The sitter is presumably the Prussian diplomat Heinrich August Alexander Wilhelm von Werther (1772 - 1859), who was appointed to the Spanish court in 1814 and held office there until 1821.
