H. 4 cm; D. 7.3 cm
NOTE:
The "tixi" carved lacquer technique, also known as "guri" in Japanese, consists of superimposing numerous layers of lacquer in alternating colors, which are then carved in depth. This technique, perfected under the Song dynasty (960-1279), reached its apogee under the Yuan dynasty (1279 - 1368). Its use continued under the Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644).
The 14th century was a key period for carved lacquer in terms of both technical virtuosity and artistic quality. Artists of great talent, such as Yang Mao and Zhang Cheng, emerged, taking this originally decorative art to imperial-quality production. The present box is a rare example of a 14th-century box and tray.

PROVENANCE:

NOTE:
The Cong tube is a complex-looking object with a cylindrical section inscribed in a square. Most often found in funerary contexts, associated with other jade artefacts (bi discs, axes), it seems to have had a ritual function, which is not precisely known. In the "Rites of the Zhou", it is symbolically associated with the earth, while the bi disk is associated with the sky.

This unusual container shape derives from a model of archaic bronzes from the Shang and Zhou

= Mallet-shaped vase
In celadon stoneware, the cylindrical body is topped by a high neck with a flared lip, and flanked by two molded carp-dragon handles. The glaze has a beautiful water-green hue with a network of cracks.
H. 24.2 cm
NOTE:
The Longquan kilns in Zhejiang's Lishui prefecture produced celadon from the mid-10th to the 16th century.
But it was under the Southern Song dynasty (1127 - 1279) that production reached its peak. The kilns were renowned for the quality of their celadon glaze and the variety of its shades, which were often compared to the beauty of jade. From this period onwards, many pieces were collected, including mallet vases, particularly sought-after in Japan, where they were known as "kinuta" (literally "mallet"). It's worth noting that, for this type of vase, there are two types of handles: those depicting phoenixes and the rarer ones depicting carp-dragons, as on the present vase.
A very similar vase, also with carp-dragon handles, is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, no. 50.145.301.
