BABIN, Jacques-Paul, S.J. Relation de l'état présent de la ville d'Athènes, ancienne capitale de la Grece, bâtie depuis 3400. ans. Avec un abbregé de son histoire & de ses antiquités. Lyon Louis Pascal 1674 12mo: [8]-182-[2] pp. Contemp. sp. calf (sl. rubbed, corners sl. rubbed), gilt orn. spine on 4 raised bands (brown., upper joint locally split.). Somewhat used but still good copy. Very rare 1st edition of this "important description of Athens [representing] the first serious attempt to describe the city from a first-hand knowledge of its contemporaty state" (Blackmer cat.). Complete with the folding engr. view of Athens (with the Parthenon pictured as "la grande mosquée"). Edition given by Jacob Spon (1647-1685) with a preface and notes, after letters sent by the French Jesuit Babin (fl. 1654-1699) to abbé Pecoil. Ref.
