In-folio, [2] f., 295 p., 89 copper-engraved plates, period speckled havana basane, spine with 6 ribs, red title piece, decorated boxes, red edges, restored binding (gilding erased, epiderminations on the plates ; small spots on the title, burnished and russeting on the ff. of text, rare on some plates, 1 plate burnished, plate XII placed head to tail).
Second edition of this remarkable work of anatomy which includes the 47 plates made in 1552 by Bartolomeo Eustachius (c. 1505-1574), considered with Vesalius and Fallopianus as one of the three great founders of modern anatomy. Only 8 of these plates were published in the "Opuscula Anatomica" edited by Eustachius in 1574, the other plates were forgotten in the reserves of the Vatican library and only came to light again at the beginning of the 18th century. A first edition of this set came out in 1744, compiled by Albinus.
The 89 plates are distributed as follows: 4 plates with figures I to VIII; 32 double plates (num. IX-XVIII, XXII, XXVII-XLVII); 7 triple plates (num. XIX-XXI, XXIII-XXVI). Title page in red and black with a beautiful vignette drawn and engraved on copper by J. Wandelaar

Original edition. "Founder, among others, of studies on oriental religions and languages, Anquetil-Duperron (1731-1805) is also the author of "Législation orientale" (1778). Against the concept of oriental despotism constructed by Montesquieu in "De l'esprit des lois" (1748), Anquetil-Duperron's work attempts to defend the rationality of the socio-political regimes of India, Persia and the Ottoman Empire" (L. Valensi, "Éloge de l'orient, éloge de l'orientalisme. Le jeu d'échecs d'Anquetil Duperron ", in Rev. Hist. des Religions, 1995, 212-4, p. 419-452). If the work did not receive, at the time of its publication, the favourable appreciation it deserved, modern criticism has restored its breadth and underlined the quality of its argument, as much as the courage of its subject matter: "No one has so violently preceded the current denouncers of colonial oppression [] Until his death he will be a first and fierce theoretician of the equality between skins of all colours. "(Raymond Schwab, Vie d'Anquetil-Duperron, 1934).
A great example of margins. (Hage Chahine, 144).

Of this 1588 edition, the historian I.E. Jones counted 46 copies preserved in public collections around the world, of which only 14 contain the map.

First edition of Indian and Oriental Astronomy, and 2nd edition for the other titles.
Beautiful set, in uniform binding, of this important work. Bailly traces the origins of astronomy to an antediluvian people, some of whose knowledge was transmitted to the Chaldean, Chinese, and Indian peoples. Modern astronomy is composed of two parts, the first of which takes the reader back to the 16th century and the theories of astrologers, the second from Kepler to Newton and universal gravitation, with the final chapters dealing with recent discoveries. The revolution took Bailly (1736-1793) away from his scientific work. As a deputy of the Third State, he presided over the famous session of the Salle du Jeu de Paume, then was proclaimed mayor of Paris and, like many others, ended up on the scaffold on November 10, 1793.
