Lot n° 34 - [THEVENEAU DE MORANDE (Ch.)]. Le Gazetier Cuirassé, or Scandalous Anecdotes of the Court of France. Printed a hundred leagues from the Bastille, A l'enseigne de la Liberté, 1771.
In-8 marbled calf, smooth decorated spine (contemporary binding).
Complete with the curious frontispiece. Original edition. (Barber, II, 523).
Charles Théveneau de Morande (1741-1805), also known under the pseudonym Gazetier cuirassé since the libelle of the same name was published from London in 1771. A true "adventurer of the Enlightenment", Théveneau began his career in the army, then led a life of unbridled libertinism in Paris which led him to flee France for England. There, he devoted himself to his activities as an underground writer and blackmailer, then from 1774 onwards, to those of a spy in the service of France (he provided information on the movements of the English fleet and the sessions of the Parliament and even took part in the operation led by Inspector Receveur pursuing the libellists). In 1784, he submitted a police plan for the city of London that was of great interest to the highest political figures of the time. Théveneau was allowed to return to France for his "good services", became director of the Courier of Europe, in which he served the interests of Mirabeau by attacking his enemies Linguet, Mirabeau, Cagliostro and Calonne, and was thus put in charge of the surveillance of the La Motte couple, suspects in the Affair of the Queen's Necklace! What an era!
