Christ on the cross is surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John holding a book; quatrefoil in the spandrels.
Paris?, first half of the 14th century Height: 9.8 cm - Width: 5.3 cm - Thickness: 1 cm -
Weight: 76 g (small lack at the upper edge, slit on the right. High Period
100 years of Larminet Davioud family collections
Son of a horse-drawn carriage manufacturer in Lille, Georges Davioud (1927-2014) made his debut
in the world of antiques, while his father's workshops had given way to a room of
sales. The loss of his two parents, André (1875-1949) and Maria (1887-1947) Davioud-Larminet,
in the post-war years had brought Georges closer to his only remaining Larminet parents, his two aunts...
Jeanne (1882-1971) and Germaine (1885-1962), and her uncle Maurice (1883-1968). Doctor in
theology and scholar of medieval philosophical thought, Maurice, assisted by his sisters, then
took Georges in affection by supporting him on a daily basis for several decades.
Initiated by his uncle Maurice Larminet to religious art, Georges developed a taste for objets d'art. Guided
progressively in the knowledge, the Larminet family bought together with Georges its
first objects in religious statuary. In the post-war period antique dealers were few and far between,
Georges soon became a well-known figure in the Lille region.
Self-taught and wise, he forged, alone, an intuitive knowledge, humbly, by dint of watching,
compare, study, visit churches and museums. Discreet man, his clientele appreciated his maid
mood and seriousness. Constantly singing, tirelessly, curious about everything, he liked to surround himself with
of some beautiful objects, under the benevolent eyes of his wife Bernadette (1926-2005) and the
the loving complicity of his eight children.
Over the years, his taste evolved, always

Lot n° 4 - Right ivory diptych shutter representing the Dormition of the Virgin under three arcatures surmounted by gables with hooks. In the centre of the composition, Christ, standing on the other side of the bed where the Virgin rests, makes a gesture of blessing with his right hand and carries the soul of his Mother in the form of a child, his hands joined; at his sides are represented the apostles, ten in number, among whom are John, holding the palm of Paradise and a book, and Paul with his sword; One of the apostles is seated in the foreground on the right, his head hooded in an attitude of meditation; on the left, an abbot, presumably the patron, holds a privileged place at the Virgin's bedside.
Paris, second quarter of the 14th century Height: 11.8 cm - Width: 9.2 cm - Weight: 126 g (fixing holes in the upper part, small missing edge at bottom right)
The left flap of the diptych was probably intended to represent the Coronation of the Virgin. This excellent workmanship can be compared with the quality of the right leaf representing a Crucifixion from the collections of the Louvre Museum (inv. OA 9356, fig.): tri-lobed arcatures, sharp eardrums alternating with bells, neatly woven hair with strong undulations and harmonious fluidity of the drapery.
Work consulted: D. Gaborit-Chopin, Ivoires médiévaux Ve - XVe siècle, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 2003, cat.64, p 405.

Randall, Masterpieces of ivory from the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, 1985, cat. 350, pp. 234-235.

Lot n° 49 - Carved oak prophet. Standing with his left leg forward, he has a phylactery in his right hand; wearing a cap with a cut-out edge of scrolls, he is dressed in a long robe with ample sleeves, split at the side, and an open mantle; a wide belt with diamond-shaped cabochons to which is hung a snail; tubular and vertical folds of the robe, broken and geometrically shaped sleeves.
Brabant, Jan I Borman, end of the 15th century Height: 32 cm
(lacks at the edge of the hat)
Work consulted: Exposition Louvain 2019/2020, Borman, A family of
Northern Renaissance Sculptors, M - Museum, M. Debaene curator, cat. 46 and 121, pp 196-197, 226.
A mortise on the back indicates that this beautiful statuette must have been fixed to an upright of an altarpiece, piece of furniture or woodwork. It is reminiscent of two others, also representing prophets, kept in the collections of the Musée de Cluny and of very similar dimensions that are now attributed to Jan I Borman (inv. Cl.15375 and 15376, fig.a). The folds of the right sleeve, deep, broken and thick, are also very comparable to those formed by the mantle on the Saint John of the Louvain Museum, around 1500, by the hand of Jan I or II Borman (inv. C/32, fig. b).
