Bibliography: Adelheid M. Gealt, George Knox, Domenico Tiepolo, A New Testament, 2006, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, Indiana, pp. 258-259, fig. 92
Provenance: probably part of the set purchased by J.F. Fayet in 1833, then by V. Luzarche until 1868

Our leaf is part of a set of 313 drawings that Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo made around 1785 - 1790. The series, now known as the Great Biblical Series, is inspired by various passages from the New Testament, the life of the Virgin and the Saints, and the Apocryphal Gospels. Jean Fayet is said to have bought the complete series in 1833 in Venice, in a shop in Saint Mark's Square. He kept 138 drawings which were bequeathed to the Louvre Museum in 1893; the Fayet Collection. The rest of the set, 175 drawings, were purchased by Victor Luzarche, who gave them to a distant relative in 1868. According to Henri Guerlain, they then found themselves in the possession of Camille Rogier. A selection of 50 drawings is published by Henri Guerlain (see H. Guerlain, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo au temps du Christ, Tours, 1921). The same year, a set of 82 leaves belonging to Roger Cormier de Tours was dispersed in Paris at a sale organized by George Petit (April 30, 1921); Léon Bonnat, Jean-François Gigoux, Vladimir Argoutinsky-Dolgoroukoff, Théodor de Wyzewa were the main buyers.
