(Heads of volume II detached, tears and scuffing, one cover partly faded, gilt rubbed in places). First edition of the first two volumes of this monumental work, the first modern nautical atlas produced in France and the result of gigantic reconnaissance work. The publication of these charts marks a break with the traditional working methods of the Dépôt de la Marine. DECORATED BINDINGS WITH THE ARMS OF THE DUKE OF ORLEANS, THE FUTURE LOUIS-PHILIPPE KING OF THE FRENCH. In 1844, the work being completed (6 volumes), the author will solemnly present a complete copy to the king. On the first ten leaves of volume I marginal wormholes sometimes reaching the compositions, marginal stains and restorations to some others. Numerous leaves crumpled, some with small tears. Most are detached from the bindings. In volume II marginal repairs to about ten leaves and traces of moisture towards the end. Without the first two leaves of Coupes. Sold as is, the description of the Maritime Bibliography not allowing a rigorous control. From the library of the Count of Lanjuinais with bookplate.
