Writing case Design Josef Hoffmann & Mathilde Flögl Execution Wiener Werkstätte Circa 1924 Leather with gold embossing, stamped 35 x 27 cm, opened 35 x 54 cm Damaged The leather department of the Wiener Werkstätte produced high-quality leather products in the 1920s. From one and a half metre high top cabinets by Otto Prutscher to matchbox covers by Josef Hoffmann, they produced their artistically crafted objects primarily in gold-embossed goatskin. The shape of this writing case was designed by Josef Hoffmann around 1919. Mathilde Flögl was responsible for the decoration around 1925. She was Hoffmann's pupil and one of the most artistically versatile women of the Wiener Werkstätte. The materials used were leather embossed with gold and silk on the inside. The portfolio is marked with the gold stamp "Wiener Werk Stätte". Literature: Same model, Wiener Werkstätte in the Museum of Applied Arts MAK, Vienna, inventory number LE 541-1.

Walking stick In the style of Peter Carl Fabergé St Petersburg 1846 - 1920 Switzerland Wooden cane Russian jade handle Silver enamel Red enamel with silver-gilt decorative elements Total length 96.5 cm, handle length 11 cm, ornamental shaft length 4.5 cm Total weight 572g The goldsmith and jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé is known for his artistic jewellery, especially the Fabergé eggs. However, he also produced other works and exerted great influence on subsequent generations of jewellers. The Fabergé walking sticks, which could be made of hard stones, enamel, and precious stones, are exceptional and revive 18th century craftsmanship techniques that Carl Fabergé discovered during his Grand Tour of Europe. Walking sticks were popular as objects of power and prestige long before Fabergé. Still, in the first half of the 20th century, Fabergé developed detailed and magnificently crafted walking sticks together with workshop manager Henrik Wigström. For example, enamel was applied to the metal areas, here in a red guilloché ground under gilded decorative elements.

Brecht, George and Rudolf Rieser. Analphabeticon. Encyclopedia for the Use of the Lettered and the Unlettered / L'Analphabeticon. Enyclopedie à l'usage des lettrés et des illettrés. 16 volumes. Illustrated throughout with silkscreens. Vaduz/Salzburg, Contempora Libri et Artes, 1981. 2352 pp. (unpaginated), Chinese binding. 17.5 x 12 cm. Original paper boards with color illustrated original cloth bindings (English and French) of which 8 in original cloth slipcase together in printed and numbered original cardboard box, erroneously marked as edition C (box somewhat stained and bumped as well as slightly torn). Papiergesänge, exhibition catalog Bayerische Staatsbibiothek, 1992, no. 138, - copy of edition A in the "heavy high-gloss" bindings and with the silkscreens printed in black; of these, 8 volumes with the French belly band and 8 volumes with the English belly band, all signed by G. Brecht and the art bookbinder R. Rieser and 9 unusually numbered, copy: 22/27, on the rear inside cover of the banderole. - The elaborately produced encyclopedia, consisting solely of hand-printed serigraphs, was published in three different editions of 27 copies each. - The volumes themselves deliberately do without title pages, volume details and imprint, with only information on the title and imprint (in German, English, French, Schwyzerdütsch or Chinese) as well as the signatures of the two artists, where applicable, to be found on the belly bands. - As both the endpapers and the screen prints in Edition A are printed in black, the only colorful accents are the prints repeated in color on the back of the banderoles and the colorful ribbon markers. - "The playful, witty contrast between the small pictures and the elaborate, traditional production of the volumes gives the work its special charm. " (Paper Songs). - With: English order card with precise details of the different editions A, B and C. - Cuts sporadically minimally brownstained, otherwise immaculate. - Provenance: Estate of Rudolf Rieser.
